Using Interior Design to Reflect Personal Style

When it comes to designing your home’s interior there are as many ways to do it as there are personalities — there is no one solution when it comes to adding décor to your home. To create a space that you will feel comfortable in, it’s a good idea to think about designing a space that reflects your personal style. While that doesn’t necessarily mean putting your favorite sports memorabilia and spoon collection on display, it can mean being intentional about how you design your home so that you will enjoy settling in to it at the end of a long day.

Know your style

The first step is to know your style. Are you a minimalist who prefers to only have the essentials around you and muted or white furnishings? Maybe you relate more to French country, making your home feel like a cottage, or favor bright colors and bold prints. Whatever your style is, it’s best to understand it before you start decorating your home. If you aren’t sure, you can browse design magazines, design stores, or open houses to see what you like and don’t like and see where you feel the most at home. Your interior design style may be similar to your personal style for your clothing, but it doesn’t have to be. One way to determine your style is to create a vision board on Pinterest of your favorite styles and see what you are drawn to.

Choose your colors

Color can change the energy of a space, and picking colors to work with can help you design your space with your personal style. Keep in mind that while red might be your favorite color for cars, nail polish, or for a fun addition to your outfit, bold colors like red are not always ideal for interior design. Bold colors are best used as accents, such as for pillows, or even lamps. It can be best to select a palette of neutrals and then add one or two accent colors that will give life to your space. This is where the Pinterest board can also help, as well as a trip to the home improvement store to look at paint colors. Keeping colors muted is especially important if you are thinking about selling your home

Show your interests

Your home can be a place to showcase your hobbies, for example, you can frame photos from your favorite vacations, or show off your green thumb through a jungle of plants. Collections of books, art, or family dishes can also have a prominent place in your home. While you don’t want your home to feel cluttered, having a few of your favorite belongings on display can give your home personality and make it feel like your own.

Make it comfortable

Especially as the days get shorter and the temperatures get cooler, you’ll appreciate having a cozy home where you can relax at the end of a long day. Think about how you spend your time at home, and then add the touches that will increase your comfort level. If you enjoy watching films or TV shows, make sure you have a comfortable couch and a decorative accent blanket. Home chefs will want to think about adding decorative touches and extra lighting to the kitchen; making it as pleasant to look at as it is functional.

Using interior design to reflect your personal style means that you’ll end up with a home that is truly your own and that you enjoy spending time in.
