First trimester problems: When to call a doctor

The moment you know that you are going to have a baby, you will experience a rollercoaster of emotions. You will be happy and scared at the same time. If it is your first time expecting a baby, you will notice many changes happening with your body, which can get scary. When you go through early pregnancy, commonly called your first trimester, you will experience many changes. Even though these changes, like nausea and vaginal bleeding, are not unusual, sometimes they can get problematic, which is when you need to call your doctor.

In this blog, you will learn about the problems a woman can experience during her first trimester and when she should call a doctor.

What is the first trimester?

The first trimester or early pregnancy is the time from the first day of your last period to week 13. This is when your body undergoes a lot of changes. Even though these changes mean you are living a normal pregnancy, sometimes they can become problematic; hence you need to keep an eye on what’s going on with your body.

Vaginal bleeding

Spotting is expected during early pregnancy but can be a matter of concern if you start experiencing heavy bleeding. Heavy bleeding can be a sign of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. If you have brighter red blood, along with cramps that are similar to your period camps, this might be an indication of a miscarriage. If you are experiencing sharp, lower abdominal pain with bleeding, you might have an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes.

This is your sign to call your doctor, who may perform an ultrasound and do some blood work that will be done based on your symptoms. Even though light spotting and bleeding are normal, you do not want to ignore the signs.

Excessive Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting during your first trimester are very common. Most pregnant women cannot handle smells during their early pregnancy, and their body feels exhausted after doing their daily chores. But if you are feeling dehydrated or your symptoms are worsening, and if you cannot keep water or fluids down for more than twelve hours, you need to call your doctor.

Vomiting that interferes with your day-to-day activities can lead to weight loss, dizziness, hydration, and an imbalance of electrolytes. It would be best to inform your doctor, who may suggest you get hospitalised to treat the dehydration. Most of the time, nausea and vomiting are the most common symptoms of pregnancy, but If you are experiencing some concerning symptoms, visit your doctor.

High fever

It may be severe if you have a fever greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit during pregnancy. The fever could be a sign of infection which may affect the baby. If your fever is accompanied by other symptoms like rash and joint pain, it may be a sign of infection, such as Cytomegalovirus, toxoplasma, and parvovirus. Cytomegalovirus is the most common sign cause of congenital deafness, and it is not as uncommon as we think.

If you notice any fever plus upper respiratory symptoms, body aches, flu-like symptoms, rashes, or joint pain, immediately contact your doctor. Your doctor will prescribe an early flu vaccine to you.

Vaginal Discharge and itching

Slight vaginal Discharge is normal, but in some cases, excessive vaginal Discharge can be a sign of infection or an untreated sexually transmitted disease which can have significant consequences on the pregnancy. If there’s a possible infection, it can harm the baby. If you experience these symptoms, don’t feel embarrassed; talking to your gynecologist can help you, and it can be treated as early as possible. It can save you and your baby both.

 Pain or Burning during urination

Pain or Burning during urination can be a sign of bladder or urinary tract infections. If these infections are left untreated, they can lead to more severe problems like illness, disorders, pre-term labor, and pre-term birth. If you have an infection, treating it may help you have a healthy pregnancy.

Severe headache, calf pain, or swelling on one side

With pregnancy, you have a greater chance of developing a blood clot. A blood clot in the calf may result in a blood clot that travels to the lung, which could be fatal. If you get a blood clot in the brain may be because of a severe headache. There are also many other possible reasons for headaches during pregnancy.

 Possible flare-ups of Chronic diseases

Women suffering from pre-existing diseases like lupus, thyroid, asthma, and high blood pressure should consider any changes during pregnancy. If pre-existing conditions are not controlled, they can cause severe consequences during your pregnancy. It would be best to talk about your pre-existing disease to your health care provider, who may guide you and help you control your diseases during pregnancy. Early treatment can help you and your baby, and you can ensure a healthy pregnancy.

The Bottom line

Your body undergoes many changes throughout pregnancy. Most of them are common, but that doesn’t mean you must turn a blind eye to your symptoms. Keep your regular visits to your doctor mandatory. Make sure you are not going through stress. Stress has never been good for any individual, and pregnancy is the most crucial time when you need to avoid stress. Maintain a healthy diet, take a lot of rest and try to stay active.
